Wineries and wine in the hills behind Rimini

01The wines of the Rimini hills

Behind the Riviera, between the Valmarecchia and the Valconca, the hills are covered in vines. The local wine has its own appellation, the DOC Rimini (called “Colli di Rimini” until 2022), which covers:

  • Sangiovese, the red of Romagna, also made as Superiore and Riserva;
  • Rebola, Rimini’s own white, made from Grechetto gentile grapes, either dry or as a sweet passito. It turns up in a notary’s deed as far back as 1378;
  • Biancame, Cabernet Sauvignon, and Rimini Rosso and Bianco.

Sangiovese is also made under the DOC Romagna, and three of its subzones are in the province of Rimini: Coriano, San Clemente and Verucchio.

The wineries belong to the Strada dei Vini e dei Sapori dei Colli di Rimini (Rimini Hills Wine and Food Route), a consortium set up in 2000 that links producers, olive mills, agriturismi (farm stays) and restaurants in the Marecchia and Conca valleys.

04Wine at Hotel Viking

Every winter we go round the local wineries, including Cantine San Valentino, Tenuta di Saiano, Tenuta Mara, Tenuta Carbognano and Tenuta Mancini, to taste the new wines and choose the ones we’ll serve. You’ll find them at dinner, with the Antonioli family’s Romagna cooking, and at the bar for an aperitivo.

A tip: if you’re visiting a winery, pick a designated driver and let them have just a taste.
