02History
- Verucchio sits on a rocky spur above the Valmarecchia. It has held the Touring Club Italiano's Orange Flag since 2005 and is one of the Borghi più belli d'Italia (the most beautiful villages in Italy).
- Almost 3,000 years ago, in the early Iron Age (9th–7th century BC), a wealthy Villanovan settlement stood on this crag. The Villanovan culture is seen as the dawn of Etruscan civilisation, and around 600 tombs have been excavated here so far, in four separate burial grounds.
- The village grew rich mainly by trading amber, a fossil resin brought from the Baltic. Large quantities of it have been found in the tombs, worked into jewellery and ornaments.
- The Villanovan tombs at Verucchio have preserved some extremely rare organic materials: woollen clothing, wooden thrones, footstools and tables, wicker helmets and containers, even remains of food. The most famous piece is the carved wooden throne on display in the Throne Room.
- The Museo Civico Archeologico has been in the former monastery of Sant'Agostino since 1985. It covers three floors, from the Hall of the Ancestors to the Amber Room and the Throne Room, and has a tactile room with a reconstruction of a princely woman's tomb.
- The Rocca Malatestiana is also called the Rocca del Sasso ("fortress of the rock") because it sits right on top of the crag. It is one of the largest and best-preserved Malatesta strongholds. The castle is first recorded in 962, the Malatesta already owned it by 1197, and Sigismondo Malatesta fortified it in 1449.
03What to see
Verucchio is known as the "cradle of the Malatesta". It was the birthplace of Malatesta da Verucchio, the "Mastin Vecchio" (Old Mastiff), nicknamed the Centenarian, who took Rimini in 1295 and is mentioned by Dante in the Divine Comedy.
Inside the Rocca you can see the two courtyards, the rooms of the Palazzo Baronale with the large Malatesta family tree, and the Torre Mastio, the keep, where the view reaches from the Adriatic to the peaks of the Apennines.
The Chiesa Collegiata, built in 1893 by the Verucchio-born architect Antonio Tondini, holds a crucifix by the "Master of Verucchio" of the 14th-century Rimini school, a crucifix painted by Nicolò di Pietro in 1401 and a canvas by Centino showing St Martin, the town's patron saint.
In the cloister of the Santa Croce convent in Villa Verucchio grows a cypress dated to the 13th century, the oldest tree in Emilia-Romagna. Legend has it that St Francis planted it in 1213.
Events through the year include the Verucchio Music Festival in July, medieval shows and dinners at the Rocca and Verucchio Calici in August, and the Fiera di Santa Croce ("Fira di quatorg") in mid-September. Look out too for the extra virgin olive oil made by the olive mills of Villa Verucchio.
