01A journey into the great director's dream

The Fellini Museum in Rimini is one of the most fascinating cultural attractions in Italy. Dedicated to the genius of Federico Fellini, the museum spans three venues in the heart of the old town:

  • Castel Sismondo, an ancient fortress housing multimedia installations and film sets;
  • Palazzo del Fulgor, where the legendary Cinema Fulgor, symbol of Fellini's childhood, comes back to life;
  • Piazza Malatesta, a large urban space transformed into an open-air stage set.

Visiting the Fellini Museum is an immersive experience blending cinema, dreams and memory. Perfect if you want a cultural alternative to the beach while staying close to the sea.

02The Fulgor – the cinema where a dream was born

Of all the Fellini Museum venues, the Palazzo del Fulgor is the most moving. This is where the Cinema Fulgor stood, where young Federico Fellini saw his first films and fell in love with the big screen for ever.

Today the Fulgor has been carefully restored and offers:

  • A cinema and theatre hall with screenings, events and retrospectives
  • Exhibition spaces telling the story of Rimini in the 1930s and 1940s
  • Interactive installations and atmospheres that make you feel you are inside a Fellini film

06How to get to the Fellini Museum from the hotel

The Fellini Museum is in the old town of Rimini, between Castel Sismondo, Piazza Malatesta and the Palazzo del Fulgor on Corso d’Augusto. From Hotel Viking in Viserbella it takes about a quarter of an hour by car or by bus.

By bike it's about 7 km, half an hour of mostly flat cycling along the sea and then towards the centre: a lovely morning ride, perhaps passing the Bridge of Tiberius and the Arch of Augustus. You'll find more routes on our cycling holiday page.

07A day in the centre of Rimini

Half a day is enough for the museum. With the rest of your time, on foot, you can see the Tempio Malatestiano, Piazza Cavour, the Bridge of Tiberius and the Borgo San Giuliano quarter, with its murals dedicated to Fellini's films. With the Rimini Pass you can add the Domus del Chirurgo and the City Museum.

The pass also includes museums and monuments in the hinterland, such as the Fortress of San Leo, the Rocca di Verucchio and the caves of Santarcangelo: ideas and distances on our inland hills and hilltop villages page. And if it rains, the museum is the perfect day out.

08A Fellini walking tour: 8 stops in Fellini's Rimini

After the museum, you can discover Fellini's Rimini on foot in half a day. This is the route we recommend to our guests, from the old town to the sea.

  1. Castel Sismondo: the fortress of Sigismondo Malatesta, main venue of the Fellini Museum, with immersive rooms of projections, lights and music.
  2. Piazza dei Sogni: the former Piazza Malatesta, with the sheet of water recalling the old moat, the large circular bench as in the finale of 8½, and the Bosco dei Nomi (Wood of Names).
  3. Rina the rhinoceros: in Piazza San Martino, at the entrance to the Palazzo del Fulgor, the life-size sculpture from the film E la nave va (And the Ship Sails On), the museum's symbol.
  4. Cinema Fulgor: on Corso d’Augusto, the cinema where young Federico saw his first films, depicted in Amarcord and redesigned by three-time Oscar winner Dante Ferretti.
  5. Piazza Cavour: with the Pigna fountain and Teatro Galli, the heart of the Rimini of Amarcord.
  6. Borgo San Giuliano: across the Bridge of Tiberius, colourful houses and murals dedicated to the characters of Fellini's films.
  7. Grand Hotel di Rimini: on the seafront, the symbol of the young Fellini's dreams, which he portrayed in Amarcord.
  8. Monumental Cemetery: the tomb of Federico Fellini and Giulietta Masina, with the monument Le Vele (The Sails) by Arnaldo Pomodoro.

The first five stops are a few minutes' walk from each other; for the Grand Hotel and the cemetery it's best to take a bike or the bus. Urban buses are included in the Rimini Pass.
