Family beach holidays in Italy: the Adriatic coast with children

Planning a family beach holiday in Italy? For families with young children, the Adriatic coast is one of the easiest choices: long sandy beaches, shallow water, lifeguards at every beach club and playgrounds right on the sand. This guide explains why the Adriatic around Rimini is so popular with families, what a week costs and how to get there from the UK. We are the Antonioli family and have run hotels on the Riviera since 1992.

01Why the Adriatic coast suits children

On the Rimini Riviera, the coast of Emilia-Romagna, the beach is wide and sandy and the sea gets deeper very gradually, so children can play at the water’s edge safely.

  • Beach clubs with umbrellas, sunbeds, showers and lifeguards;
  • playgrounds and kids’ entertainment on the beach;
  • plenty of family hotels with children’s menus, cots and half board;
  • theme parks close by for rainy days.

Compared with Sardinia, Sicily or the Amalfi Coast, the Adriatic is usually better value for families, with sandy beaches instead of rocky coves.

02Rimini and Viserbella for families

Viserbella is the quiet north end of Rimini: less traffic than the centre, wide beaches and the Parco del Mare seafront promenade with a cycle path into town. Our partner beach club, Bagno Neri 53, has a playground and an entertainment team that has won the award for the best team on the beach. In the evening there are shows on the promenade.

Days out from the hotel (straight-line distance):

  • Italia in Miniatura about 1 km, walkable;
  • Fiabilandia about 10 km, great for little ones;
  • Aquafan and Oltremare about 17 km, in Riccione;
  • Cattolica Aquarium about 23 km;
  • Mirabilandia about 34 km, Italy’s largest theme park.

We can get discounted tickets on request.

07The best time for a family beach holiday
