01Verucchio at a glance
A day trip into the hills from Hotel Viking, the Antonioli family's 3-star hotel in Viserbella di Rimini: Verucchio is the cradle of the Malatesta family, with its fortress on the hilltop, the Archaeological Museum and its treasures of the Villanovan civilisation, and views stretching from the valley to the sea.
It's 21.8 km from the hotel, about 40 minutes by car: half a day or a full day, then back to the sea in the evening for our Romagna cooking. Food festivals and fêtes at that time of year are listed on our events in Rimini page.

02History
- Verucchio looks out over the Valmarecchia from a rocky spur: it has held the Touring Club Italiano's Orange Flag since 2005 and is one of the Borghi più belli d'Italia (Most Beautiful Villages in Italy).
- Almost 3,000 years ago, in the early Iron Age (9th–7th century BC), a wealthy centre of the Villanovan culture, seen as the dawn of Etruscan civilisation, stood on the crag; so far around 600 tombs have been excavated, spread across four necropolises.
- The village's wealth came mainly from the trade in amber, a fossil resin brought from the Baltic: an extraordinary quantity of it has been found in the tombs, worked into jewellery and ornaments.
- Verucchio's Villanovan tombs have preserved extremely rare organic materials: woollen garments, wooden thrones, footstools and small tables, wicker helmets and containers, even food remains; the most celebrated piece is the carved wooden throne displayed in the Throne Room.
- Since 1985 the Museo Civico Archeologico has been housed in the former monastery of Sant'Agostino and is spread over three floors, from the Hall of the Ancestors to the Amber Room and the Throne Room, with a tactile room that recreates the tomb of a princess.
- The Rocca Malatestiana, known as the Rocca del Sasso because it stands on top of the crag, is one of the largest and best-preserved Malatesta fortresses: the first records of the castle date back to 962, the Malatesta already owned it in 1197 and Sigismondo Malatesta fortified it in 1449.
03What to see
Verucchio is called the "cradle of the Malatesta": this is where Malatesta da Verucchio was born, the "Mastin Vecchio" (Old Mastiff) known as the Centenarian, who conquered Rimini in 1295 and is mentioned by Dante in the Divine Comedy.
Inside the Rocca you can visit the two courtyards, the halls of the Palazzo Baronale with the great Malatesta family tree, and the Torre Mastio (keep), with views stretching from the Adriatic to the peaks of the Apennines.
The Chiesa Collegiata, built in 1893 by the Verucchio-born architect Antonio Tondini, holds a crucifix by the "Master of Verucchio" of the 14th-century Rimini school, a crucifix painted by Nicolò di Pietro in 1401 and a canvas by Centino showing St Martin, the town's patron saint.
In the cloister of the convent of Santa Croce, in Villa Verucchio, grows a cypress dated to the 13th century, the oldest tree in Emilia-Romagna: tradition has it that St Francis planted it in 1213.
Events include the Verucchio Music Festival in July, medieval shows and dinners at the Rocca and Verucchio Calici in August, and the Fiera di Santa Croce ("Fira di quatorg") in mid-September. Local produce includes the extra virgin olive oil from the olive mills of Villa Verucchio.
